As citizens of New Orleans were about to celebrate Katrina's 3rd anniversary of destruction, they had a new spiraling clouds of craziness to worry about. Hurricane Gustav formed over the warm Atlantic Ocean, slammed through the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba - killing over 100 people. If you look at a map of it's track, where it's been and where it's about to go, you can tell it's headed straight for New Orleans. Mayor Ray Nagin issued a mandatory evacuation of all citizens in New Orleans. If one decides to stay and ride out the storm, they will get no assistance from the government. People without transportation will be picked up by bus and brought to Memphis, Tennessee or Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Most of the residents have learned their lesson from Katrina, saying that they're not going to take a chance with the storm, and evacuating. Very few will stay, as that choice will not be a smart one.
Currently, the hurricane is a category 3 which means it has sustained winds of around 111MPH to 130 MPH. Yesterday, [August 30] it was a category 4, but it went down to a category 3, and is expected to be a category 4 when it makes landfall. Where it makes landfall, no one knows, but New Orleans looks like it'll get the dead hit. This storm is extremely large, so it doesn't matter where it hits, because most gulf coast cities will be impacted. The storm surge, which is a huge wall of water coming from the ocean, is expected to be as high as 18 feet and will flood the cities from Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and the Western portion of Florida.
The next storm that's coming? Tropical Storm Hannah!
It's hard to tell where it's going to go, but I think it will hit Florida, Bahamas, and then through Georgia, South Carolina, and Eastern North Carolina.
